Woven Roots

Woven Roots is a collection of woven blankets that reinterprets traditional Scottish tartans for modern interiors. The project aims to preserve cultural heritage by embracing traditional methods such as dyeing, hand spinning, and weaving, while reimagining tartan through interesting textures and bold colour palettes.  

At a time where handcrafted traditions are increasingly threatened by fast fashion and mass production, Woven Roots offers a fresh perspective, honouring the past while celebrating the potential for change. Wool is central to the project, valued not only for its sustainability and natural durability, but also for its deep-rooted significance in the history of tartan. Through hands on processes, from fibre preparation and dyeing to spinning and weaving, the project highlights the complex but beautiful process of traditional craft. The project advocates for the continued use of natural materials, both for their lower environmental impact and for the unique qualities they bring to tactile, long-lasting design. 

The inspiration behind Woven Roots comes from the designer’s own Scottish heritage and time spent with family in Scotland. Drawing specifically from the Douglas clan tartan, the colour palette is heavily influenced by the natural surroundings of the designer’s childhood home, captured in hand-dyed yarns and experimental weave structures. These explorations result in bold yet familiar pieces that push the boundaries of traditional tartan through playful use of colour, texture, and scale. The hand-spun wool adds a raw, organic quality, forming a bridge between the past and present, and  tradition and innovation.
